Admiral William J. Halsey was the most decorated U.S. naval officer of the 20th century, earning 12 medals of honor along with thirteen battle stars during his career. He was the only person to achieve the rank of five-star admiral in the U.S
Navy, and was also honored by three different presidents with awards, including the Presidential Unit Citation for bringing an end to World War II in the Pacific Theater. A lifelong sailor, he began his career at sea aboard the destroyer USS Patterson in June 1919 at age 17. He was cited for bravery in action during his tour aboard the destroyer USS Sinclair in 1921, and won a Navy Cross for heroic leadership during battle against Japanese forces in 1938 while serving on board USS Yorktown, again saving his ship from sinking after being hit by fire from Japanese planes.
